the latest
busy bees and oscar buzz.
On top of having a wonderful week, I am ecstatic to find out that one of my all time favourite films, District 9, has been nominated for several Oscars! It’s up against the likes of films like Avatar and Inglorious Basterds in Best Picture, Film Editing, Visual Effects and Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and I really hope it brings home an award or two. After hearing the criticism that Avatar has received, D9 seems far more deserving as it has more substance (in my opinion, anyway) than simply graphics and a whole lot of money.
However, when you consider the fact that it’s usually the underdogs that win Oscars, not the popular films, maybe D9 does stand a chance after all! Good luck Christopher, Wikus and District 9; I support non-human rights!
As for what has actually been going on with
me this week, I have been thrown head first back into the world of learning. After several weeks off and doing nothing, then two of intense revision and insane exams, I’m back at my regular seminars with a couple new lecture additions thanks to my two new modules for this semester. I can’t say I’m wonderfully happy with them so far; I only took them because I
have to spend those credits and they seemed like the most interesting ones. I am even less happy to find out that I also have to have tutorials for them, one of which will probably end up being on my day off. Hooray…
The other day I finally resigned from my position as a support moderator at RPG-D. I’ve been trying over the past couple of weeks to be active again, but even now without exams and studying weighing me down, I just don’t have the time. I’m sad to go, but its better that someone with the time to devote to the job has it instead. I haven’t even been able to role play lately; every time I knuckle down and try to write something ends up pulling me away. Life can be such a hassle!

plus one house.
I am happy to say that my mood has completely changed over the past few days, despite the fact that I still don’t think that I’ve done particularly well in my exams. I left my speaking one with much less of a feeling of dread than my written one, but in retrospect I didn’t really do very well. I used little to no complex grammar, accidently slipped in a few informals and for reasons unknown to me, kept trying to speak in German! I wish I’d at least tried to say ‘Sorry! I used to study German!’ but the sense to do that completely eluded me at the time.
Saturday in particular was a very eventful day for me, consisting of house hunting and eventually the purchase of one! Well, we made a deposit on one to rent, that is. The fact that I’m going to be living with my friends next year is so much more real now that we’ve actually secured our house, and what a lovely house it is! The bedrooms are all fantastic (despite that four of them have showers in them, wtf?) and the kitchen looks great and will be a welcome change from our crappy hall kitchen and the poor catered food.
I can’t wait until we sort out whose room is whose! I certainly don’t want to arrive on moving day and have to keep moving all of my things around; there are a
lot of stairs! As long as I’m near a toilet so I don’t disturb people with my many nightly trips, all will be well, though. I swear, I must have the smallest bladder known to man and it’s
such a pain.
I also had my first McDonald’s burger this week, shocking though that may sound. I was never a fan of cheeseburgers and always opted for chicken nuggets, but man do I regret all those wasted years now. It was nommy.
The temptation to order another Hannari Tofu cushion is overwhelming now that they have the green version of my bolster pillow in stock (I had wanted that one originally as it matches my sheets) but after having spent £350 this week on a house, £21 on toiletries in the hope of taming my sensitive skin and even more on the occasional food and drink, I am somewhat less willing to purchase something else.
The sense of power that came from holding everyone’s deposits was a lovely one though, even if the feeling of giving it away was absolutely soul-crushing.

just 40%, eh?
So, my first exam was pretty much a disaster and I will be very,
very surprised to have over 40, no,
30% in it. Apparently when our teachers say that the units we haven’t done won’t be in it, they actually mean that they will. It didn’t particularly help that I had no sleep and had been drinking the night before, but I made my bed and I suppose I had to lie in it.
I received a couple of things in the mail this week, the first being my oh so lovely retainers. Now that I have my braces off, I’m expected to wear the lower one all the time, the only problem being that I can’t talk with it in and it props my tongue up and makes my jaw hurt. This should correct the remaining crookedness in my over-crowded bottom jaw, but it seems to work just from wearing it for a few hours a day. So, I’ve taken to wearing it when I’m alone to save myself the inevitable embarrassment of spitting all over everyone in public. I’ve got three months before I have to see the orthodontist again, hopefully it’ll work despite not wearing it 24/7!
The second thing I got was my new scheduler for 2010. Although I don’t often remember to
use them, I felt I should get one this year and the allure of this adorable one was just too great to resist!
The subtitle reads 'cats know various things'.
I think they know too much.
It’s a wonderfully sized little book with a mini calendar spread on every double page, with plenty of room to write things for each day and lots of cute little cats clambering all over the boxes and doing generally catty things. As it’s Japanese, it also comes complete with Japanese holidays for my own entertainment.
And, speaking of cats, I can’t help but wonder what to name my cats when I become a crazy cat lady spinster. Five seems like a good number to me, but so far I only have Simon Pegg and Paul Merton as definite names. I like both of the human versions, but the main allure is just the names! “Simon Pegg, get off the dining room table! D8<” and so on. They would need to be addressed by their full names, of course. Whether or not to hurl the cats at passers by I have yet to decide.<br />
Aren’t I optimistic about my future?

studying!? oh my!
Apparently when I actually get around to revising I put too much into it. Went to the library with friends last night and we were there for hours; I completely forgot my previous engagement to meet people for sushi. Sushi would’ve been a far lovelier option than studying, but I did at least get some work done. I’m slowly catching up on all of the vocabulary I foolishly neglected to learn last semester, and I hopefully won’t make that same mistake again this semester.
Studying with friends at the library does seem to be the way to go for me now, though. I can’t leave unless everyone else does, and if I talk I get scolded! Seems to work quite well and it sure as heck was nice to be out with people again. But here’s hoping I’m actually absorbing everything that I’m revising.
My computer is being completely ridiculous today though. It’s done this before, but for some reason it keeps clicking stuff and messing up what I’m typing or scrolling down a page. Never links, well, not yet, but it’s very disruptive and disconnecting my mouse does nothing to stop it. It’s
really annoying and deleted half of a post on RPG-D earlier. Twice. And I just rebooted and it did nothing help. Stupid moody laptop.
In other news, I really wish I had more confidence. I don’t like feeling hopeless and crappy about myself.

i am queen of the procrastination nation.
Revision is difficult when you have very low motivation. Even when I know I have to do well, I just can never bring myself to devote myself to studying. So I made myself some Sainsbury’s Tomato and Mozerella tortelloni, which I must say is delicious!
